Butane Lighters Prohibited on Flights to the U.S.
Effective March 1, 2005, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) added lighters to the list of prohibited items that are not allowed past the secure area at U.S. airports on flights to, from, or within the U.S. There will be no change to the screening process in U.S. airports under the new policy. Walk-through metal detector screening and secondary screening will continue according to U.S. procedure. Lighters will be treated as any other prohibited item. Unless a passenger attempts to artfully conceal a lighter, or there are other aggravating circumstances, passengers are unlikely to be fined.
Other Prohibited Items
Forbidden items include guns, knives, explosives, compressed gas cylinders, flammable liquids such as paint thinner, turpentine or chlorine and other potentially dangerous household goods including spray paint that could explode under pressure. Restricted items are subject to change.
Increased Aviation Screening Procedures in the U.S.
With effect from August 10, 2006, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) implemented a series of security measures, some visible and some not visible, to ensure the security of the traveling public and the U.S. transportation system. These measures will be constantly evaluated and updated as circumstances warrant.
Liquid Items Permitted Onboard Aircraft
Effective September 26, 2006, travelers may now carry onboard travel-size toiletries (no salve, gloss or gel), 3 ounces or less. Items should be placed in a clear plastic, resealable bag not exceeding 8 in x 8 in (20 cm x 20 cm). Items must fit comfortably in a single quart-size, clear plastic, zip-top bag when closed. Larger quantities must be placed in checked baggage. If you are required to take medication, you may carry only the amount you need for the flight in your carry-on bag. It should be in original packaging, along with the prescription. Travelers may also bring certain previously banned items onboard the aircraft, including beverages purchased in the secure boarding area.
