For the first time in history, a Wimbledon champion hails from The Islands of The Bahamas.
On Sunday, July 5, 2009, Mark Knowles became the first Bahamian to win Wimbledon as he and partner Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany won the mixed doubles title. Their win came of top-seeded Leander Paes of India and Cara Black of Zimbabwe. The close match ended at 7-5, 6-3.
The Wimbledon win completes Knowles' grand slam winning circle. He has won the men’s doubles championship at the Australian Open (2002), US Open (2004) and the French Open (2007) with former Canadian partner, Daniel Nestor.
Knowles is known for his annual charity tournament at Paradise Island, The Bahamas. Many tennis stars participate in the event, which raises funds for Bahamian children's charities.
