The History of Cat Island

While history shows Christopher Columbus landed on San Salvador in 1492, there is evidence his first landing actually may have been on Cat Island. This topic gives locals and visitors plenty to talk about.
It is believed the earliest residents were the peaceful Arawaks and they were the first to welcome Columbus to the New World. You can still explore the remains of slave huts dating back to the 1700s and Arawak Indian caves. Cat Islanders are known for their ingenuity at using the materials at hand to make whatever they need. Much of The Bahamas' indigenous music, folklore and myth originated here. Cat Island also prides itself on creating The Bahamas’ finest rake ’n scrape music and has an annual festival to celebrate.
