(242 342-3053The Club House at Greenwood Beach Resort, with the rooms nestled behind it is, literally, 80 feet away from a breath-taking 8-mile long beach. The logo for the resort is “Find Yourself,” and it is interesting to ask your fellow guests to give their interpretation of that logo. Charming, unique, quaint are some of the adjectives used to describe Greenwood. Without a doubt, the incredible beach speaks for itself. A person can walk for miles and never see another human being. Sometimes you may see a fish jump, a lazy sea-gull swoop down to investigate something interesting on a reef or find a special shell and you realize that there is not that much important to bother you ever.
Greenwood has 85% return visitors. In fact, after meeting at Greenwood many guests plan their vacations in such a way that they return together at the same time of year, every year. It could be the diving. When you hear guests talking about being “off the wall,” it is not what you think. It means they have returned from a dive off an ocean wall where they become part of the underwater world of sharks, barracudas, parrot fish, groupers, snappers and the sneaky moray eel, yes, the one with the nasty temper. Families and children are definitely what create the fabric of Greenwood.
Whether you are from a big city, thriving town or small village somewhere in the world, the minute you reach Greenwood, your shoes come off and you are free to roam the beach; grab a kayak and just go; get fitted with a mask and snorkel and hit the pool-clear water off the beach, while your parents relax under the shade of the beach cabanas or loll in the hammocks under the palm trees or even join you in your activity of the moment.
Of particular interest to children is the art of “crabbin’. Most evenings after dinner, the call goes out: “OK kids, let's go crabbin’. This entails grabbing your sneakers, putting on long pants, getting a flash light and pail and going off by truck or usually just walking down the road. When you hear rustlin’ in the bushes, you know the crabs are walking. The scary part is going into the bush, shining your light on the crab, which then mesmerizes the crab, you put your foot on him (gently) try not to get caught by his big claw and throw him in your bucket. Then you go back to the resort, where all the guests exclaim at your bravery. Then “Pedro” the crab man-guide, takes the crabs home to be fattened up with bread and then turned into the savory baked crab or crab and rice.
In 1992, the Illing family of Krefeld, Germany, saw and fell in love with Cat Island and Greenwood. For sixteen years they have lived their dream of being able to dive, swim, snorkel, and enjoy every day. For sixteen years they have shared this dream with their guests. Ana, the Mom, runs the resort; Valdimar, Papa, overseas and helps with (with the aid of their three sons, Chris, Florian, and Timmy) every nuance of the resort. Valdimar has been diving for fifty years. He has been diving all over the world on marine archeological sites with the likes of Jacque Cousteau. He and his sons regale their guests with stories of their underwater adventures.
The most distinctive geographic highlights of Greenwood Beach is the beach, beach and more beach.
