Nightlife

The Exumas

Nightclubs and bars at hotels and lodges provide most of the evening entertainment in The Exumas. Live music can also be found during Happy Hour at nightclubs and other local hangouts, while dining in one of the restaurants, or at the Fish Fry in George Town. Some places offer a very laidback experience, usually with a night of Goombay, Rake & Scrape, karaoke, and/or dance music, plus nightly games.Read More

Nightlife

The Berry Islands

Nightly pursuits in Great Harbour Cay can include joining the locals at a neighborhood hangout for friendly competition at pool, dominoes or other games; disco dancing to music from the hottest DJs; singing karaoke at a club on weekends; watching televised sporting games, or simply taking in the spectacular sunsets while sipping a local brew or tropical delight. Live music is provided at popular locations like White Water Disco, during festivals and on national holidays; disco music is provided on weekends. On the outlying cays, hotels and resorts organize entertainment for guests, depending on what they prefer to do. A fun experience is hiring the resident Junkanoo band not only to perform, but also to teach their rhythmic dances.

The Abacos

Entertainment here is concentrated in the bars of the resorts and at marinas. They offer live music at varied places on different nights throughout the year, but generally during the winter season. Several pubs and sports bars offer a daily Happy Hour and feature everything from karaoke, pool tables, darts, card and domino games, to DJ or live music for dancing on weekends. National musicians that call The Abacos home make it a point to return annually and perform at community celebrations and festivals. Bands that perform here regularly include The New Entry Band, Impact Band, Gully Roosters, Boogie Down Boys, T Time Rake & Scrape, Chris “The Burner” & Toni Toni, and Suppa Time.

Rum Cay

You can hang out under the almond tree at Kaye's Sand Bar, sipping a brew and socializing with the locals. Kaye’s offers piped Golden Oldies music daily, frequent domino and pool tournaments, and movie nights. Shake a leg to local music at Kaye's or at Ocean View Bar on most weekends and national holidays. For a romantic interlude, lounge on Picnic Bay Beach and watch the sunset, or a full moon lighting up the night. The Rum Cay Day Festival in February is the biggest entertainment ticket here and residents from neighboring islands join in celebration with the locals.

Ragged Island

Ragged Island has given The Islands Of The Bahamas two cultural icons that achieved worldwide acclaim—legendary pianist Edmund Moxey, known for his influence on Rake & Scrape music, and singer/songwriter Kayla Lockhart-Edwards. While on Ragged Island, you can play a game of dominoes at the Ponderosa Bar, join the Big Sport Game nights at Silver Tails Fishing Lodge, shoot pool at Sheila's Fisherman's Lounge, or sip a brew with the locals at Hill Top View Bar. All of the nightspots provide DJ music for dancing on mail-boat days and national holidays. Boaters set their schedules to be in Ragged Island for an annual get-together around Valentine’s Day, which features a bonfire and luau.

Mayaguana

There is really no formal nighttime entertainment here; however, you can still enjoy the evenings. The Baycaner Beach Resort offers a relaxing lounge where you can enjoy a tropical cocktail with an ocean view and watch the sunset, or the moon and stars. There are also several nice hangouts where locals gather in the evenings. You’ll likely hear tall tales of the fishermen’s daily escapades at sea, plus you can join a game of dominoes, pool or whisk and earn your own bragging rights. Live musical performances by national artists are the norm during annual festivals held on national holidays.

Long Island

Whether you prefer dancing to the latest sounds, singing old tunes at karaoke, competing in a game with the locals, or just hanging out with some friends sipping a brew, you'll find the right place here for you. Some of the major hotels and resorts have get-togethers during the winter season, usually featuring a live band. Most of the local hangouts have live entertainment on national holidays and occasionally on weekends, with Rake & Scrape music the mainstay. When you’re enjoying music at a bar or club, you’re likely to hear locals say, “Come knock the conch style,” or even, “Get down to smashing the roach,” like Long Islanders danced back in the day.

Inagua

Inaguans love to entertain and the nighttime offerings here let you experience all the southern charm the island is known for. Hang out at nightspots for karaoke and friendly competition at dominoes. Join in to kick off the weekend on Thursdays, when locals gather at Kiwanis Park early in the evening to sip a local brew and listen to DJ or piped music. Later on, they head to late night spots for disco dancing. Serenading is popular during Festival month in August and in December for the Christmas holidays. A band rides around town on a flat-bed truck playing music, and visitors can jump onboard and scrape a saw or shake a bell with the residents.

Eleuthera & Harbour Island

The hub of live entertainment here is usually the hotels and resorts during the winter season. But, a variety of local entertainers also provide dance music throughout the islands on weekends. You can soak up some local flavor at popular hangouts, the Fish Fry at Anchor Bay in Governor’s Harbour, and at homecoming festivals held in different towns on national holiday weekends. Read More

Nightlife

Cat Island

The Islands Of The Bahamas’ indigenous Rake & Scrape music and "heel and toe polka" dance moves are common on Cat Island. Locals here believe that theirs is the finest in the country. The annual Cat Island Rake & Scrape Festival held each June showcases the sensuous, rhythmic vibe of the music, performed by local and national artists and featuring quadrille dancing. Year-round, bars at the resorts and local hangouts often provide piped, jukebox, disco or live music for dancing and karaoke, or to accompany a game of cards, Dominoes, or pool with the locals.

Andros

Andros is blessed with entertainers that have made a mark in the music world, creating indigenous music. Local musicians are able to use the most basic form of “instruments” such as washboards, bottle corks nailed to a stick, or the poinciana seed pod as a shaker to create the greatest heart-thumping, leg-shaking, and body-weaving rhythm on this side of the gulf. The sounds of Andros are regularly showcased and most places offer music by live bands or DJs and dancing on weekends. Do it like a native and try a "rum-shop crawl," stopping at one of the local hangouts for a more laid-back experience, or see what entertainment your hotel rolls out in the evening.

Acklins & Crooked Island

On Acklins & Crooked Island, you can choose to relax in the tranquil seaside atmosphere, but just about every town has a lively nightspot where you can hang out with the locals. They offer a number of ways to show your competitive spirit—in a game of cards, dominoes or playing pool. Dance the night away to DJ music, a jukebox or piped music. Some bars and clubs occasionally have live performances by the local Rake & Scrape band on weekends. Entertainment by local and national bands is usually featured at the annual community fairs and homecomings, as well as major events. A “Singspiration” is held during the Emancipation Day celebrations in August.

Bahamian Music

The Bahamas has three indigenous forms of music: Goombay, Junkanoo and Rake & Scrape. The beat of the drum and the rake of the saw create some of our signature sounds.

Famous Bahamian Musicians

Harbour Cruises

Launching from the major harbours, dinner cruises provide a great way to spend a romantic evening under the stars. Boat cruises, which are upbeat parties on the water, are a unique way to dance the night away. Certified captains and tour guides are on hand to make sure you have an unforgettable night.

Popular Drinks

Our signature drinks are as colorful and fun as our people. Sky Juice, a mixture of sweet milk, gin and coconut water is popular with locals. The fruity Bahama Mama is widely consumed, along with the Goombay Smash. Kalik and Sands beer are our top local brews. Switcha, or Bahamian lemonade, is a refreshing “unleaded” drink.
