As would be expected, fresh seafood is the main feature here, including grilled and steamed fish, cracked conch and other conch dishes, with lobster in season. Local specialties are fresh free-range mutton, turtle soup, peas and rice, and baked macaroni and cheese. You can find traditional Bahamian dishes at Ponderosa, Sheila's Fisherman’s Lounge, and Silver Tails Fishing Lodge. The restaurants are not open regularly, except on mail-boat day and national holidays. However, you can always get a meal from places like Sheila’s with prior notice and People-to-People volunteers who have personal relationships with regular boaters will often invite them to eat with their families when they’re in the area.
