Mayaguana's indigenous cuisine features a variety of dishes made from what islanders call "land crabs," served with grits, rice, or dumplings, in soup, and boiled. Other local specialties you’ll want to taste include fish salad and conch salad made with boiled conch and mayonnaise, as opposed to the raw version found on most other islands. Quaint native-style restaurants throughout the island offer these and other traditional Bahamian dishes. Casual eateries and takeaway restaurants also serve snacks like hamburgers and fries, and fried fish and chicken, in addition to healthier options. All three of the island’s homecoming festivals put an emphasis on local specialties: Betsy Bay at Easter, Abraham’s Bay and Pirate’s Well in August.
