Traveling around Grand Bahama Island

How To Get Around

There are several options to help you get around on your own. Pedestrians should remember to first look right and then left before crossing streets.

Find a Carrier

Rentals

You must be 21 years old and possess a valid driver’s license for all rentals. Visitors may use their home driver’s license for up to three months or can apply for an international driver’s license if staying with us longer. Regardless which vehicle you choose to explore the island with, remember, when you take to the road, please keep to the left.

Bus

Public buses or "jitneys," as we like to call them, operate between both Port Lucaya Marketplace and the downtown area, and from downtown to the outlying areas of West End and East End. Fares charged are based on your destination and exact change is required. The fare to any area within the city of Freeport is $1.00; Downtown Freeport to Eastern Grand Bahama ranges from $1.25 to $8.00; Downtown Freeport to Western Grand Bahama rages from $1.25 to $4.00.

Rental Bikes

Some hotels have bicycles for rent, but generally for the use of their guests. Rental bike depots are adjacent to the Tourism Information Center at Port Lucaya Marketplace. In the Lucaya area, there is an official cycling path on Midshipman Road, but please be careful.

Rental Cars

Renting a car is a convenient way for you to explore more of the island on your own time. Rental cars, equipped for left-hand driving, are available at the airport.

Rental Scooters

Motor scooters are available for rent at several locations in Freeport and Lucaya and scooter depots are adjacent to the Tourism Information Center at Port Lucaya Marketplace. Renting a motor scooter gives you and a passenger the freedom to buzz around town and/or explore the settlements outside the city limits. If you’re lucky you may find the perfect, quiet spot to watch the sunset.

Taxis

Taxi stands are conveniently located at the airport and most hotels. Taxi service is also available by telephone or on the street. Taxi rates in Grand Bahama Island are zoned, or can also be metered. Metered rates are reasonable and are fixed by law. Surcharges often apply for more than two persons and extra luggage. You can request to be charged by the taxi meter, rather than a flat rate, if you prefer. Taxi rates within Freeport and Lucaya range from $11.00 to $24.00 for up to two passengers.
