Traveling around The Abacos

How To Get Around

On the mainland of Abaco, you may choose to rent a bicycle, car, golf cart or scooter to get around, but taxis are readily available via VHF Channel 6 and are usually stationed at the airports to meet incoming flights, at the docks and major hotels. To explore the Abaco Cays that are only accessible by water, you have the option of renting or chartering a boat. While on the cays, you'll find that bicycles and golf carts are the preferred mode of transport, in addition to walking. Pedestrians should remember to first look right and then left before crossing streets.

Rentals

You must be 21 years old for all rentals, except for boats, and possess a valid driver’s license. Visitors may use their home driver’s license for up to three months or can apply for an international driver’s license if staying with us longer. But remember, when you take to the road, please keep to the left.

Rental Boats

A renter must be at least 25 years of age, with some boating experience, in order to rent a boat. It usually comes with a briefing chart and a map to ensure that visitors get the best boating experience while cruising the Sea of Abaco. If you choose not to navigate your own boat, you can utilize the services of a local captain. If you rent or charter, companies offer boats of all sizes and styles, from small bareboats to the most luxurious air-conditioned catamarans complete with professional crews.

Taxis

All Taxis can be reached on VHF Channel 6. Although metered rates vary by island, they are reasonable and are fixed by law. Surcharges often apply for more than two persons and extra luggage. Suggested tip is 15% of fare. Taxi fares from the two airports for two passengers (children under three are free) range from $10 to $150, depending on whether it’s a local destination or outlying area.
