Silver And Bronze Make a Gold Medal Effort for Bahamian Athletes

The Islands Of The Bahamas Defends Per Capita Medal Title in Third Consecutive Summer Olympic Games; Places 2010 Winter Olympic Hopes in Snowboarder Korath Wright

Nassau, The Bahamas – Sept. 1, 2008 – With one silver and one bronze medal secured in the 2008 Summer Olympics, athletes from The Islands Of The Bahamas have once again brought home the most medals per capita of any participating country. That's one medal for every 153,725 Bahamians.

The reigning world champions of per capita medals, The Bahamas have held the demographic title since the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, when the women's 4-x-100-meter relay team won gold and Pauline Davis-Thompson brought home silver in the 200-meter.  In 2004, Tonique Williams-Darling stunned the competition, taking gold in the 400-meter race, while Debbie Ferguson won bronze in the 200-meter.

The Bahamas will have the chance to secure the per capita medal title for the first time ever at the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver in 2010. Bahamian snowboarder Korath Wright took 3rd place at the World Cup in 2006, and has since been training around the world to become the first Bahamian ever to compete in a winter games sport.

Life in The Islands Of The Bahamas is as culturally diverse as it is vibrantly beautiful, from the carefree Out Islands to exciting Nassau/Paradise Island and Grand Bahama Island. With world-class diving and fishing, gorgeous turquoise water and miles of picture perfect beaches, the 700 islands of The Bahamas offer visitors the opportunity to do everything or nothing at all.
