Bestselling Author Terry McMillian Set to Participate in Valentine’s Day Vacation Getaway on Grand Bahama Island

GRAND BAHAMA — Jan. 15, 2009 — The Islands Of The Bahamas has partnered with Turquoise Waters Productions to create Island Heart Beats Experience: Take Your Heart on Vacation, the ultimate girlfriends’ getaway.

Island Heart Beats Experience: Take Your Heart on Vacation is a three-day weekend (Feb. 12-15) celebration on Grand Bahama Island designed to put a new twist on Valentine’s Day by encouraging African American women and women of color to love and appreciate themselves first.

“We are all painfully aware of the stress and damage in our personal and professional lives, but we pay little attention to the fact that heart disease is the number one killer of African American women,” said Nicole M. Scott, president of Turquoise Waters Productions. “The point of Island Heart Beats Experience: Take Your Heart on Vacation is to encourage black women and women of color to take a 360-degree look at their lives through reconnecting with their hearts in a way that uplifts and inspires them.”

Island Heart Beats: Take Your Heart on Vacation is guaranteed to invigorate the mind, body and spirit through a variety of activities, workshops, seminars, excursions and island nightlife. Participants will have access to spa treatments, enchanted tours, and a full array of water sports such as jet skiing, scuba diving, parasailing, and yoga at sunrise on the beach.

This year’s event will also feature a creative writing workshop hosted by Terry McMillian, the bestselling author of “Waiting to Exhale” and “How Stella Got Her Groove Back.” Ms. McMillian, who is currently putting the finishing touches on her new book “Getting to Happy,” will lead a discussion on the writing process. Other celebrity participants will include Sybil Wilkes of The Tom Joyner Morning Show and Dr. Rovenia Brock, a leading health and nutrition expert.

“The Islands Of The Bahamas is honored to be the host destination of Island Heart Beats: Take Your Heart on Vacation,” said Anita Johnson-Patty, communications manager of the Americas, Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and Aviation. “We feel confident that the women participating in this unique Valentine’s Day vacation getaway will fall in love with the warmth and beauty of Grand Bahama Island, the friendliness of the Bahamian people, and our shared history and culture with the African American community.”
