Sunshine Insurance Race Weekend is in its eleventh annual running of the marathon, half marathon, and relay, in addition to its tenth running of Bahamas Race for the Cure 5k.
Marathon Bahamas has become the preeminent endurance event of the country. With a dawn start, runners take to the streets of Nassau running into history through downtown and slowly taking in the breathtaking views as they traverse the bridge to world-famous Paradise Island. On the return to Nassau, runners are greeted with the slow-rising winter sun before turning west to open ocean vistas and returning to a dramatic oceanfront finish at Arawak Cay, where the celebration begins. Marathon-day events include the marathon as well as a half marathon and a four-person relay, which start simultaneously.
Race weekend has an event for all fitness levels and is ideal for families, a group of colleagues, or a friends' run-and-stay-cation. The marathon features runners from 26 countries and 31 states in the U.S., and it is supported by a large volunteer contingent from every walk of Bahamian life.
The Bahamas Race for the Cure 5K, which precedes the marathon on Saturday, is an opportunity for people of all ages to celebrate survivorship, remember those who have been lost to the disease, and make a difference in the fight against breast cancer. It can also be used as a 'warm up' for the marathon.
