Fortune Hill Plantation

Mr. Burton Williams, a Loyalist, owned thisformer cotton plantation at Fortune Hill in the late 1780s. It was the largest one on the island at the time, covering more than three miles. It is located in the middle of San Salvadors eastern coast, and you can still see the ruins of the Great House, which was constructed from cut limestone and represents the height of Georgian architecture, the dominant British colonial style of the 18th and early 19th century. Remnants of slave quarters are also there, plus outbuildings on the left side of the complex that include a storage shed, stables and work spaces. The octagonalshaped building, with a missing roof, was formerly either the latrine or library (depending on who you talk to), and was build over a sink hole. The estate also had the only gin mill on the island at the time.
