Salt Ponds & Canal

The trenches for the salt canals were hand cut by slaves. The salt canals were made so that the water could flow from the Atlantic side into the canals to make salt. The canals were called Dr. Dubass and Chantry. There were sailboats that came all the way from England and Scotland to bring supplies into the Clarence Town Harbor. Whenever there were no supplies to bring the boats would be loaded down with ballast pebbles so that the boat did not sink some of the pebbles were gold bars. The Long Islanders raked salt and stocked it up in sacks provided by the boats and then toted them to the harbor on a horse and buggy. After the salt was stocked on the boats, the pebbles would be thrown overboard. The workers earned pennies worth 23 cents per day.
