On August 2, 1991, the Director-General of UNESCO, in the presence of the Prime Minister of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas, declared San Salvador a Monument of the Quincentennial, acknowledging it as the geographical starting point of the new American epoch commencing October 12, 1492. This monument commemorates that declaration.
