Café Matisse Offers Authentic Italian Cuisine & Historical Charm

Café Matisse has been a Bay Street culinary staple since it first opened in 1996. In addition to the restaurant’s authentic Italian fare, the building’s interior, which is over 100 years old and was once home to a library, is reminiscent of the charming and character rich eateries seen throughout Italy. And, despite the emphasis on Italian cuisine and aesthetic, Café Matisse is surrounded by pieces of Bahamian history, culture, and beautiful architecture that create an experience that is unique to Nassau.

Even though the restaurant is just a short distance from the hustle and bustle of Bay Street, it is easy to lose track of time in its serene outdoor courtyard, especially if one of their deceptively strong house-made sangrias is a part of the dining experience. Well known for their flavourful and consistent cuisine, Café Matisse also has an attentive team, resulting in a relaxed, yet fine dining afternoon or night out for patrons.

Each meal starts with a complimentary plate of fresh bruschetta and focaccia bread, before diners are able to choose from a menu that includes seasonal dishes, fresh pasta, pizza, seafood, risotto, gnocchi, and long-time menu favourites like their Frittura Leggera di Calamari e Marmellata al Peperoncino Rosso (crispy fried calamari with chili jam), or Insalata di Manzo (grilled tender beef salad with onions, sugar snaps, tomatoes, parmesan shavings and balsamic dressing).

If diners still have room after enjoying a hearty meal and a glass of wine or two from the restaurant’s extensive wine menu, it is highly recommended to indulge in a bit of dessert, such as the Mousse di Cioccolato (white and dark chocolate mousse) or a complimentary biscotti.
