Bahamian Filmmaker Makes Splash In Canada

Toronto…Bahamian film director and producer Kareem Mortimer recently held a reception in Toronto during the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and under the patronage of His Excellency the High Commissioner of The Bahamas to Canada, Dr. Calsey Johnson.  The event was a celebration of Bahamian culture highlighting the many important contributions made by the Bahamas on the International Film Festival circuit.

The invitation-only private reception was held in swanky Yorkville, in mid-town Toronto, a networking and social hotspot during TIFF, when major motion film industry directors, producers and executives, as well as top-billing actors are in town to showcase the best in the industry.  Produced by David Vallee, a reality television personality, attendees also included supporters of Bahamian film-making, executives from the Bahamas Tourist Office in Canada and a number of prominent resident Bahamians.

“The event has been graciously sponsored in part by the Ministry of Tourism, Cable Bahamas and Best Ever Film  and I am honoured that Their Excellencies, Dr. and Mrs. Johnson, took the time out of their busy schedules in Ottawa to come to the event,” Kareem Mortimer said.

Mortimer further noted that in his ‘salad days’ he worked on several films produced in The Bahamas including ‘After the Sunset’ and ‘Into The Blue.’

“I tell you, the most beautifully shot scenes from both films are the amazing gin clear ocean water that is the Bahamas’ calling card. Since then, our film community continues to grow with very qualified crew, many amazing actors who work all over the world and story tellers who are not just telling the stories of our Bahamas – which we definitely are – but I hope stories that speak to people across the global village, regardless of nationality.”
