The Bahamas Hosted SOTIC 2018 – The Islands Of The Bahamas hosted this year’s State of Tourism Industry Conference (SOTIC) at Atlantis, Paradise Island on October 1-5, 2018. The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and Aviation Minister Dionisio D’Aguilar and Director General Joy Jibrilu addressed key issues and opportunities for enhancing tourism in the region in their final year as Chairman and Director of the Board of the Caribbean Tourism Organization, respectively. Industry professionals, policymakers and strategic partners from the public and private sectors throughout the Caribbean gathered for a week of events, discussions and ideation surrounding this year’s theme: “Rejuvenate, Recreate, Reconnect. New Directions for Caribbean Tourism.”

Old Bahama Bay Resort & Yacht Harbour Expansion – As part of the rejuvenation of Freeport, Grand Bahama Island, Old Bahama Bay Resort & Yacht Harbour has received approval to move forward with their plans for a new development called Grande Harbour at Old Bahama Bay Resort. The current plans include 460 luxury condos, stunning infinity pools, a lavish spa, two restaurants, athletic courts, a convention hall with venue space, a 78 slip Dockaminium with extended dockage for mega yachts and much more. Grande Harbour will also include a community hurricane shelter for resort employees, their families and West End residents. The expansion is expected to bring to the island, roughly 900 construction jobs and full-time employment for over 300 persons.

World Junior Judo Championships To Be Held In Nassau – From October 17-21, Nassau will host the World Junior Judo Championships at the Atlantis, Paradise Island Resort, where qualified judoka will compete as representatives of their home countries. Over 670 athletes, coaches and delegates from more than 70 countries are expected to visit Nassau and attend the championships. This sporting event has the potential to be the largest single-sport sporting event ever hosted in the country, with a positive economic impact due to the volume of visitors.

Sandals Resorts International Eliminates Single-Use Plastic – Nassau’s Sandals Royal Bahamian Resort and all other 18 Sandals and Beaches properties throughout the Caribbean islands will eliminate single-use plastic straws and stirrers by November 1, 2018. Sandals is among the recent uprising of companies committing to environmental sustainability to help save wildlife and promote cleaner oceans.
