Ecotourism In The Exumas

There are two extensive national parks in The Exumas. The 176-square-mile Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, created in 1958, was the first land and sea park in the world and is one of the most successful marine parks. It is the first "no-take reserve" (all fishing is prohibited) in the wider Caribbean. This stretch of pristine water, land and beaches is an ecological preserve and wildlife refuge famous for its breathtaking marine environment. You can feed the endangered Bahamian iguanas or catch a glimpse of the elusive hutia. Moriah Harbour Cay National Park covers 13,440 acres and its marine environs are a vital part of the ecosystem between Great and Little Exuma. Other ecological wonders here include the phenomenal sandbars peering from the translucent shallow waters at low tide, Thunderball Grotto, where you can swim through a large rock and still see the sky, the Blow Hole at Boise Cay with a 10-foot geyser, and Dripping Cave at Guana Cay, with stalactites and stalagmites and no obvious source for where the dripping water is coming from.
