The History of Long Island

Unlike its size, Long Island has a rather short history. Numerous Loyalist families settled here, some setting up cotton plantations and others raising cattle and sheep. They flourished until the abolition of slavery in 1834. Today, Long Island is the leading livestock-rearing island in The Bahamas for sheep, goats and pigs. Farmers also cultivate bananas, pineapples and other crops.
