Art Experiences That Will Make You Feel Cultured
The Bahamas has everything, from the best beaches in the Caribbean to one of the most thriving art industries. From sculptors, to painters, to salt artists - it's safe to say our creatives are taking advantage of all niches The Bahamas has to offer.
With that being said, there are a number of art experiences in Nassau you must take advantage of before departing. Not only will you be amazed but you'll have the best time and some of the best images afterwards. Think of it like this, if The Bahamas itself were an art gallery, you would wander around for days just like you do when you visit. Get lost in these experiences This one is on us.
1. The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas (NAGB) - The NAGB was the first building of its kind — historic Villa Doyle restored as a national museum in the 1990s. It was designed as part of a larger system of museums that would record and preserve the history of The Bahamas. It's within walking distance of downtown Nassau. Similar to other significant buildings in The Bahamas, the NAGB also carries history as it connects downtown with what is known as the "Over the Hill" community. What you'll see inside will no doubt amaze you as the surprises will continue to appear as you move from room to room. Inside there are four spaces, the permanent exhibition space, the PS room (project space) and two exhibition spaces. When I tell you, this isn't just any "ole" gallery, believe me. Every level tells a story in a different medium and at the core of the narrative are creative Bahamians.
2. Hillside House: Picture for one second, you're on your way to explore downtown Nassau and you're standing to the side wondering where to start and if there's some place a little less busy in a town that never seems to slow down. There is and it's a quiet yet quaint space in the middle of Nassau which allows you to connect with everything around you, yet not at all. Get it? Hillside House is the brainchild of Bahamian artist Antonius Roberts and it's an all-embracing space filled with pieces that fuse art and history.
3. Doongalik Studios: Recently, the façade of this brightly colored building complex has featured fascinating images., Even if you don't make it inside - snap a picture and tag the location, you'll not only seem cultured but you'll certainly feel it. After that's done, wander inside and you'll find the work of Bahamian artists on exhibition throughout the gallery. When you're done, slip next door and you'll find the coolest Bahamian craft store ever, certainly worth the trip.
4. The Current: The new kid on the block is the Current located in the Grand Hyatt, Baha Mar. I know what you're thinking, when is Baha Mar going to stop being dope? I think the same thing as I realize I spend more time there than anywhere else on the island. What I especially like about this property is even if you're not an art connoisseur, you can't leave without feeling the energies of the creatives that are featured in this space.
